Frisco’s Commitment to Environmental Sustainability

Frisco’s Commitment to Environmental Sustainability

Frisco, Texas, is actively promoting environmental sustainability through various initiatives and community programs. The city’s Environmental Services department is dedicated to being environmentally responsible stewards, aiming to improve the quality of life for residents and safeguard natural resources for future generations. They manage residential recycling and trash services, commercial waste and recycling, environmental education, and household hazardous waste disposal.

Community Engagement and Education

Frisco encourages community involvement through programs like ‘Keep Frisco Beautiful’ with Adopt-a-Street and annual litter cleanups, and ‘Teens4Green,’ a student-led program raising awareness about environmental impacts. The city also offers educational programs and classes for scout troops, service groups, churches, and schools to learn about environmentally friendly practices and community service opportunities.

Environmental Collection Center

The Environmental Collection Center provides residents with a facility to dispose of household chemicals, electronics, and other special items safely. Open five days a week, the center accepts items like household cleaners, automotive chemicals, fertilizers, paints, light bulbs, batteries, and electronics for environmentally safe disposal and recycling. Operating hours are subject to change in case of inclement weather for the safety of workers and visitors.

Frisco ISD’s Sustainability Efforts

Frisco Independent School District (FISD) actively participates in environmental sustainability by implementing recycling programs across all campuses. Students lead these initiatives under the supervision of a lead teacher, organizing recycling efforts and educating peers about the recycling process. FISD also focuses on cafeteria waste reduction through the Food Rescue program, aiming to divert waste from landfills while teaching students about sustainability.

Grand Park Development

In a significant move towards enhancing green spaces, Frisco is developing Grand Park, a massive green space spanning approximately 1,011 acres—making it larger than New York’s Central Park. The park will be developed in multiple phases, extending from the west side of the Dallas North Tollway to Lake Lewisville. The estimated cost for the first phase is around $43 million, funded through previous bonds and support from the Frisco Community Development Corporation. Completion of this initial phase is targeted for October 2027.

Through these initiatives, Frisco demonstrates a strong commitment to environmental sustainability, engaging the community in preserving and enhancing the city’s natural resources for present and future generations.
